Notes for James Patterson Hope
See misc. notes of the other James (brother)

Dear Martin, I have found new information, (for me, you may already know it) about the Patterson family. I was looking through the 1881 census for Great Britain, ( I have it on C D Rom) and found James Patterson (1823) living at Nether Garrel, Kirkmichael, Dumfries, Scotland, a farmer with 200 acres pasture, and 130 arable. With him is his brother William (1835) who it seems was a partner in the same farm. Both men were unmarried. Next on the list is their mother, Esther Patterson (nee Hope) but they have her age as 83, this may be a miss print as her age should be 88, she is a widow, next on the list is Janet Charteris (nee Patterson) the youngest daughter of James and Esther, she was born in 1841 and she was a widow. there are two children for Janet, (1) Margaret Charteris (1860) at Kirkmichael, and (2) Helen Charteris (1863) also born at Kirkmichael. So here is another name that you can tie into your family tree. Would you like another new ? There is another person on the list, Thomas Dobie. He is the nephew on Thomas and William, and the grandson of Esther he is 26 (1855) and worked on the farm for James and William, and he was born at Dryfesdale, Dumfries. So now we have to new leads. Charteris and Dobie.I think the mother of Thomas Dobie is either Margaret Patterson or Mary Patterson. I shall go and have a look right now.
I found them living at Croftside, Hoddam, Dumfries. Margaret was married to Thomas Dobie, also a farmer (66 acres)

Thomas Dobie was age 60 on the census, and born in Applegarth. they had 7 children, Thomas, (26) who I have already mentioned, the eldest was David (28) Esther (24) Mary (22) James (19) George (17) all these children were born in Dryfesdale, then the last child on the list is William he is 15 and was born in Hoddam. all children were employed on their fathers farm. I shall leave you to digest all this, and I shall get back in a few days to tell you what I can find out about the Charteris branch of the family, I did have a quick look and found 40 Charteris in the Dumfries area.
