Duplication of names usually indicates that one of those children died in infancy, Years are concurrent an indication of no stillborn children to the family. No twins were born.
I did not find a *Thomas Patterson for the year of 1836 as stated by you but if you look at the age of Thomas' death and subtract that from the year of his death you find a birth year of 1831 We do have a Thomas Patterson for 1832. so this could be him. When you consider the poor numerical Illiteracy that was quite wide spread during this period of time it is acceptable to have a difference in dates.
My next task is to look for marriages for the above children and then to look for deaths.

Esther HOPE
Christening: 2 Sep 1796
Applegarth, Dumfries, Scotland
Father: William HOPE
Mother: Mary JOHNSTON
Si no lo fuera, puede ser una hermana fallecida el año anterior, algo bastante usual.

In 1881 Esther Patterson (Hope) was still alive and living with 2 of her sons at Nether Garrel, Kirkmichael,Dumfries, she was 84 (YOB 1797) she was a widow, she was born at Applegarth, Dumfries, Scotland. She lived with James (58) and William (46) There are quite a few Pattersons in the Dumfries area I shall see if I can print off a list of them and post it to you.
(from the 1881 Census)
Anne Reid, 33, 17/9/02

I was looking through the 1881 census for Great Britain, ( I have it on CD Rom) and found James Patterson (1823) living at Nether Garrel, Kirkmichael, Dumfries, Scotland, a farmer with 200 acres pasture, and 130 arable. With him is his brother William (1835) who it seems was a partner in the same farm. Both men were unmarried. Next on the list is their mother, Esther Patterson (nee Hope) but they have her age as 83, this may be a miss print as her age should be 88, she is a widow, next on the list is Janet Charteris (nee Patterson) the youngest daughter of James and Esther, she was born in 1841 and she was a widow. there are two children for Janet, (1) Margaret Charteris (1860) at Kirkmichael, and (2) Helen Charteris (1863) also born at Kirkmichael. So here is another name that you can tie into your family tree. Would you like another new ?

There is another person on the list, Thomas Dobie. He is the nephew on Thomas and William, and the grandson of Esther he is 26 (1855) and worked on the farm for James and William, and he was born at Dryfesdale, Dumfries. So now we have to new leads. Charteris and Dobie.I think the mother of Thomas Dobie is either Margaret Patterson or Mary Patterson. I shall go and have a look right now,

I'll be back! Hola! I'm back. I found them living at Croftside, Hoddam Dumfries. Margaret was married to Thomas Dobie, also a farmer (66 acres) Thomas Dobie was age 60 on the census, and born in Applegarth. they had 7 children, Thomas, (26) who I have already mentioned, the eldest was David (28) Esther (24) Mary (22) James (19) George (17) all these children were born in Dryfesdale, then the last child on the list is William he is 15 and was born in Hoddam. all children were employed on their fathers farm. I shall leave you to digest all this, and I shall get back in a few days tow tell you what I can find out about the Charteris branch of the family, I did have a quick look and found 40 Charteris in the Dumfries area. Please will you send me your postal address, I have a photograph to send to you of the grave of Esther Patterson, daughter of Thomas and Agnes (Clarke) Patterson who died at Arrow Harbour and is buried at Darwin Cemetery. I can't send it via e-mail as my scanner is not working. Look forward to hearing from you.
