From the 1881 census I have learned that James (1823) and William (1835) never married.

Janet, James' sister is listed as being a widow with the suname of Charteris. with her are 2 daughters Margaret and Helen. 21 and 18 respectivley.

There is also a Thomas Dobie on the list who is a nephew of James (1823)

He could be either be Mary or Margaret's son.So I went looking and found out a lot more. Janet's husband was Robert Charteris, (b) 3 Mar 1841 at Carsway, Dumfries.His father was James Charteris and his mother Helen Bell. Janet and Robert were married on 24 Nov 1863 at Kirkmichael. But I have no death date for Robert, yet!
